Engine performance plays a crucial role in reliability and fuel economy for business owners; if your ECM fails, your engine may not start at all, and that can lead to lost profits. We’ll get you back on the road quickly with Cummins ECMs designed and manufactured by our trusted partners.

Signs Your Cummins ECM Is Failing

Common Symptoms & Fault Codes

Checking codes is the best way to determine whether or not your ECM is failing. Common ECM failure codes include:

P0601: Internal Control Module Memory Checksum Error

P0602: Control Module Programming Error

P0603: Internal Control Module Keep Alive Memory (KAM) Error

P0604: Internal Control Module Random Access Memory (RAM) Error

P0605: Internal Control Module Read-Only Memory (ROM) Error

P0606: Control Module Processor (Generic)

P0607: Control Module Performance (Self-Diagnostic Failure)

The symptoms of a faulty ECM are diverse; as the control module, if your ECM fails, all sorts of problems can affect your machine. You might:

  • See your check engine light go on
  • Have a hard time starting your vehicle
  • Experience unexpected stalling
  • Experience poor fuel economy
  • See random revving
  • Get a lot of high or low volt codes from engine sensors
  • Get other random codes

Basically, if it seems like there are system-wide issues in your engine that don’t relate to each other in any other obvious way, it could be an ECM-related issue.

Troubleshooting: Is It The ECM Or The Wiring?

ECM problems are almost (but not always) identified with the P codes we listed above. Wiring problems – and more specifically, problems with your CAN bus system – will typically result in U codes. Seeing a U code? It could be a CAN bus wiring problem.

Another important check is whether or not the ECM can actually communicate with a scan tool; if it can’t, there’s probably no power to the ECM, which could indicate a wiring or grounding problem; if the ECM is communicating, it’s less likely to be a wiring problem.

When other modules are giving low voltage codes (one of the symptoms we mentioned above), or if the ECM is failing randomly, it’s another sign that there’s likely a problem with the wiring or grounding.

The best way to check? Replace your existing ECM with a new ECM that’s properly tuned to your vehicle; if that ECM works without a problem, then your old ECM is probably busted.
